The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disputed claims by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) regarding the cause of recent power outages affecting parts of Anambra and Enugu states.

In a statement released on Thursday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah categorically denied EEDC's assertion that an explosion at a TCN substation was responsible for the blackout experienced in the affected regions.

"Contrary to EEDC's claim, there was no explosion at the Transmission Company of Nigeria station at Onitsha sub-region," the TCN statement clarified.

The controversy began when EEDC attributed power outages in its franchise areas, particularly Anambra State and Oji River in Enugu State, to an alleged explosion at TCN's Awada station, which they claimed occurred at approximately 2:34 am.

Actual Cause of the Power Disruption

According to TCN, the actual cause of the partial power loss in the 330KV switch yard at Onitsha Sub-Region on August 21, 2025, was an "insulation flashover of the porcelain insulator of the Red Phase Jumper conductor to Busbar 1" that occurred during rainfall.

The company further stated that power supply was successfully restored at 17:54 hours on the same day, contradicting implications of a prolonged outage due to equipment explosion.

TCN also revealed that it had already scheduled maintenance for August 31 and September 1, 2025, specifically to replace the stack porcelain insulators in question.

"We clarify that there was no explosion of equipment or loss of switchgear equipment in the TCN Onitsha region," the statement emphasized.

Call for Professional Communication

In a pointed rebuke to EEDC, the transmission company urged the distribution company to ensure accuracy in its public communications, stating that "deliberate deception or propaganda is unprofessional and unacceptable."

This dispute highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria's power sector, where communication between transmission and distribution companies can impact public perception and trust in the electricity supply chain.

The incident affects thousands of electricity consumers across the two southeastern states who have experienced service disruptions.
