The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent assault on Corps member Edema Elohor Jennifer by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

The incident, which involved female corps members serving in Anambra State, resulted in Jennifer being severely brutalized by local vigilantes, sparking outrage across the nation.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, NANS Public Relations Officer, Comrade Samson Adeyemi, described the attack as "not only unjustified but also a gross violation of the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of a young Nigerian serving her nation under the National Youth Service Corps scheme."

"It is deeply troubling that such brutality could be meted out to a corps member, an individual who has answered the national call to service and who deserves every protection and respect guaranteed under the law," the statement read.

NANS further characterized the incident as "a dangerous affront to the ideals of national service, rule of law, and human rights," while expressing concern about "the increasing tendency of unregulated security outfits to act outside the bounds of legality and accountability."

The student body has called on the Anambra State Government and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, ensure accountability for those responsible, and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Adeyemi emphasized the importance of corps members feeling safe and protected in their places of primary assignment and residence throughout the country.

The association expressed solidarity with Edema Elohor Jennifer and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian students and youths. NANS also urged the NYSC and security agencies to collaborate in ensuring that Corps Lodges remain secure and corps members are protected from such violations.

This incident has drawn reactions from prominent figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who expressed being "ashamed and heartbroken" over the assault. Additionally, the wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Soludo, has also condemned the stripping of the female NYSC member by vigilante operatives.

Reports indicate that the security operatives involved in the assault have been arrested as investigations continue.
