Three people lost their lives in a multiple road accident that occurred on the Auchi–Okpella–Okene road in Edo State over the weekend. The tragic incident happened near Omega Fire Ministry in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
According to reports, the crash involved a Dangote truck and three other vehicles, including a Mercedes GLK which was damaged beyond recognition. The truck, which was heading towards Benin, experienced brake failure and subsequently rammed into the three vehicles, resulting in immediate fatalities.
The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident and provided details about the victims. "The truck had a brake failure, and in the process, rammed into three vehicles, killing three persons and injuring one," Mathew stated.
He further explained that "Six persons were involved in the accident, three died including two male and one female adults while two others escaped unhurt. Four people were in the Mercedes, three of them died and one injured."
The FRSC commander urged truck drivers to prioritize proper vehicle maintenance and exercise greater caution on the roads. He emphasized the importance of avoiding overspeeding, noting that when mechanical issues arise, properly maintained vehicles at reasonable speeds can be more easily controlled to safety.
This tragic accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Edo State, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles on major highways. Local authorities continue to advocate for stricter adherence to safety regulations and regular vehicle inspections to prevent similar incidents.
