Details have emerged regarding why the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) recommended the cancellation of Eberechi Eze's goal during the Crystal Palace match against Chelsea in the English Premier League.
Eze believed he had given Crystal Palace the lead after successfully firing a free-kick past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. However, the celebration was short-lived as VAR intervened to disallow the goal.
According to the official review, Palace defender Marc Guehi was found to have violated positioning rules during the set-piece. The Premier League Match Centre clarified the decision in an official statement.
"After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to Crystal Palace," the statement read.
The referee's announcement further explained: "After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. Therefore, it's an indirect free kick and a disallowed goal."
This decision highlights the strict enforcement of set-piece regulations in the Premier League this season, where players from the attacking team must maintain a minimum distance from the defensive wall during free-kicks.
The match between Chelsea and Crystal Palace continues to be closely contested, with both teams seeking crucial points in the early stages of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
