The Jos Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of communities devastated by recent flooding in Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The assessment follows a severe windstorm and subsequent flooding that destroyed over 50 houses and washed away several hectares of rice farms on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

Led by Chief Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, Mrs. Judith Bai, the NEMA team visited multiple affected villages including Shimankar, Kalong, Anguwan Dadi, Unguwan Yargam, Wali, Gisa, and Unguwan Zam to evaluate the extent of damage.

During the assessment visit, the Village Head of Shemankkat, HRH Miskoom Maurice M. Danjuma, received the team at his palace and expressed deep concern about the disaster's impact on residents' livelihoods.

"This incident has severely affected our people and their sources of livelihood," Danjuma stated, appealing to NEMA, state and federal governments, and other relevant organizations to provide assistance to help affected residents recover.

Chris Nettiem, Secretary of Shendam Local Government, who represented Chairman Kemi Nicholas Nshe during the visit, commended NEMA for its swift response to the disaster. He assured that the local council would maintain its partnership with the agency to address the affected communities' needs.

The comprehensive assessment was conducted collaboratively by NEMA officials, Shendam LGA representatives, and members of the Local Government Emergency Management Committee (LEMC).

This disaster comes amid growing concerns about increased flooding incidents across Nigeria during this year's rainy season, with several states already reporting significant damage to infrastructure and agricultural lands.
