Former Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has called on FIFA to deduct three points and three goals from South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for fielding an ineligible player during their match against Lesotho in March.

The controversy stems from South Africa's decision to field Teboho Mokoena in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho, despite the player being suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in previous matches.

Rohr, who currently coaches the Benin Republic national team, expressed frustration over FIFA's delay in addressing what he considers a straightforward matter.

Speaking with veteran Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana in France, Rohr stated: "I'm calling on FIFA to make themselves clear on the points situation in our 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, as South Africa used an ineligible player in a World Cup qualifier, which means they must lose three points and three goals to the opponent of the said match, Lesotho."

"I'm surprised that FIFA is taking too long to resolve what a very straightforward matter is. It should and must be resolved without further delay," he added.

The situation has significant implications for Group C standings, where South Africa currently leads with 13 points, followed by Rwanda, Benin Republic (8 points), and Nigeria (7 points). With only four matches remaining in the qualification campaign, any points deduction could dramatically alter the group dynamics.

Rohr's Benin Republic team competes in the same qualifying group as Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe, making his interest in the matter both professional and strategic.

The next round of World Cup qualifier fixtures is scheduled for September, with South Africa set to face Nigeria in Bloemfontein on September 9th.
