Spanish LaLiga club Villarreal has publicly addressed their decision to sign Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey despite the player currently facing rape allegations in England.

The club confirmed the transfer of the 32-year-old midfielder on Thursday, August 7, 2025, after he became a free agent following his departure from Arsenal. Partey has signed a two-year contract with the Yellow Submarine.

Just days before the transfer announcement, Partey appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London where he was granted bail in relation to the ongoing case.

In an official statement explaining their position, Villarreal said: "The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England. The player now firmly maintains his innocence and denies all the charges."

The Spanish side emphasized their commitment to legal principles, adding: "The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case."

This transfer marks a significant career move for Partey, who spent four seasons with Arsenal in the English Premier League before becoming a free agent this summer. The Ghanaian international will now look to rebuild his career in Spain while his legal issues continue in England.

Villarreal's decision has sparked discussions in football circles about the ethical considerations of signing players facing serious allegations, balanced against the legal principle of presumption of innocence.
