The Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has issued a stern warning against land grabbing in Ilesa and its environs, while calling on the police to maintain neutrality in land dispute cases pending judicial determinations.
The traditional ruler made this declaration during a courtesy visit by the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to his palace in Ilesa on August 7, 2025.
During the meeting, Oba Haastrup emphasized the critical need for law enforcement agencies to avoid taking sides in matters involving contested government lands, revealing that Ilesa recently narrowly escaped unrest following a dispute between the Leventis Foundation and a private individual.
"The city of Ilesa, known for its peacefulness, would have been embroiled in chaos but for our quick action," the monarch stated, explaining that his swift intervention prevented what could have escalated into a major crisis.
The traditional ruler attributed the recent increase in land-related misconduct partly to the failing health of his predecessor during the latter's final days on the throne. He noted that certain individuals have been laying dubious claims to public lands through questionable means and undue influence.
"Some of these people flaunt connections with senior law enforcement officers to justify their unlawful actions," Oba Haastrup revealed, adding, "Let me be unequivocal about my abhorrence of criminal conduct for financial gain at the expense of the larger society."
The monarch called for transparency and fairness in police operations, stating: "It is important that the Police High Command and the lower constituent units operate above board in manners that are impartial and equitable, and seen by all to be so."
Beyond land issues, Oba Haastrup also highlighted security concerns in the region, requesting the establishment of additional police divisions, particularly in the Oriade local government area, citing population growth and inadequate security coverage.
"I feel constrained to inform you that we have not been adequately provided with police presence," the traditional ruler noted.
In response, CP Gotan assured the Owa Obokun of the police's commitment to maintaining peace in Ijesaland and denied any involvement in the ongoing Leventis land dispute.
"I never gave any order to any party to build on the land. I have no contact with the parties," the Commissioner clarified, while expressing appreciation to the monarch for his role in preventing the escalation of the land dispute.
The Police Commissioner also acknowledged the importance of traditional institutions in conflict resolution within communities.
