Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions following President Bola Tinubu's announcement of a substantial reward package for the D'Tigress basketball team after their historic fifth consecutive Women's AfroBasket championship victory in Côte d'Ivoire.

The Nigerian female basketball team defeated Mali 78-64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on Sunday, cementing their status as the only country to win the prestigious continental title five times in a row.

During a reception at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, announced an impressive reward package for the team. Each player will receive $100,000, while technical crew members will get $50,000 each. Additionally, all team members and officials will be awarded apartments in the Federal Capital Territory and national honors.

The announcement has sparked widespread reactions across social media platforms, with many Nigerians expressing surprise at the government's financial capacity amid economic challenges.

Prisca Thomas commented on Facebook, "So this kind money dey this country? Chim oo," expressing shock at the amount being disbursed.

Another Facebook user, Etimbuk Benson, criticized the financial decision, stating: "He will go and borrow money and come and share it in dollars.. good economic policy.. una do well o."

Odugala Joseph added to the criticism, writing: "It has been confirmed that we share borrowed money. Asiwaju, money na water."

Meanwhile, Tunde Royalte simply remarked, "National cake must go round," suggesting the rewards were part of distributing national resources.

The D'Tigress' achievement represents a significant milestone in African basketball history. Their fifth consecutive title further solidifies Nigeria's dominance in women's basketball on the continent and highlights the team's exceptional talent and consistency over the years.

Sports analysts have noted that while the reward package is generous, it also reflects the government's recognition of the importance of celebrating sporting excellence and providing incentives for athletes representing the nation on international stages.
