Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernandez, has expressed concerns about his team's Europa League draw as they prepare to face Napoli in the round of 32 on Thursday.
The Spanish tactician believes Barcelona was unfortunate with the pairing, describing Napoli as a "Champions League-level side" despite their current participation in Europe's second-tier competition.
"We were unlucky with the draw. Napoli are a Champions League-level side. It is going to be a difficult tie. I would not say we're favourites [for the competition or the tie]," Xavi stated.
This matchup marks a reunion between the two clubs, who previously met in the Champions League last 16 two years ago. According to Xavi, the caliber of teams like Napoli competing in the Europa League demonstrates the tournament's growing strength and competitiveness.
The Barcelona manager further emphasized the challenge ahead, noting: "It is an open draw. Napoli are one of the toughest teams in the competition and we have to play the second leg away from home next week. There are other teams, like Sevilla, in this competition with a lot of experience. We're candidates, but I would not say favourites."
Barcelona's Europa League campaign represents a significant shift for the Catalan giants, who have traditionally competed in the Champions League. Their presence in this competition highlights the club's recent struggles to maintain their position among Europe's elite.
The first leg of the Barcelona-Napoli tie will take place at Camp Nou before the teams travel to Italy for the decisive second leg next week.
