At least 22 people have been confirmed dead and 20 others injured in a tragic lone accident involving a trailer along the Lapai–Lambata road in Niger State. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at approximately 3:00 a.m.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, Aishat Saadu, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, revealing that the trailer was conveying both passengers and cattle from Kano to Lagos.

"The crash occurred around 0300hrs along the Lapai–Lambata route," Saadu stated. "It was a lone crash involving a truck. Forty-two people were involved. Twenty-two died, while twenty sustained various degrees of injuries as at the time of rescue."

According to eyewitnesses, most of the passengers on board were from Zamfara State and were reportedly traveling for commercial purposes. The injured victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Lambata for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital in Suleja.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Niger State and across Nigeria's highways, particularly regarding commercial vehicles carrying both passengers and goods. Authorities have yet to provide details on the specific cause of the crash.

The use of trailers and trucks for passenger transportation, despite being unsafe and often illegal, continues to be a practice in parts of northern Nigeria, especially for long-distance travel between states.
