Germany-based Nigerian attacker, Victor Boniface has launched a scathing criticism against some of his Super Eagles teammates, accusing them of showing indifference towards match results while representing the national team.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker expressed his frustration during an interview with The Culture League podcast, where he highlighted the casual attitude some players display during international duty.
"If some of my teammates are going to the national team, they feel like, we go, we play, whether we win or lose, it doesn't matter," Boniface stated. "I am always trying to say to them, we are millions in Nigeria. I think in Africa, we have the highest population."
The 24-year-old emphasized that playing for Nigeria should be considered a privilege, not an entitlement, given the millions of talented Nigerians who would eagerly seize such an opportunity if given the chance.
Boniface's Club Career
Boniface was instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen's historic Bundesliga title win during the 2023-24 season, contributing significantly to the team's success. Despite rumors of a potential move to Saudi Arabia this summer, the transfer reportedly fell through, meaning the striker will remain with the German champions for the foreseeable future.
His comments come at a time when the Super Eagles are facing increased scrutiny following recent performances in international competitions. The Nigerian national team, despite boasting several players in top European leagues, has sometimes struggled to translate individual talent into collective success.
Boniface's criticism highlights a potential issue within the team's culture and raises questions about commitment levels among some players when representing their country.
Football analysts have suggested that addressing this mentality could be crucial for the Super Eagles' future success in continental and global competitions.
