The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to suspend Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa following a controversial penalty decision during the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final against Nigeria.
According to Morocco World News, the FRMF cited "refereeing injustices" in their complaint, claiming that Twanyanyukwa's decision significantly influenced the outcome of the championship match that took place last Saturday.
The controversy occurred in the 82nd minute with the score tied at 2-2. Twanyanyukwa initially awarded Morocco a penalty after suspecting a handball by Nigeria's Oluwatosin Demehin. However, following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the referee overturned her decision after determining that Demehin's arm was positioned close to her body.
The Super Falcons capitalized on the momentum shift shortly afterward when Jennifer Echegini scored what proved to be the winning goal, securing a 3-2 victory for Nigeria and the continental title.
The petition marks the latest chapter in what has been a tension-filled tournament final. Nigerian fans had previously expressed concerns about laser pointers being directed at Super Falcons players during the match, with some calling for CAF to take action against such behavior from sections of the Moroccan supporters.
Following their triumph, Nigeria's Super Falcons have received significant recognition, including a presidential dinner where artists Teni, Flavour, and Timi Dakolo performed. The team also received a N24 million gift from Super Eagles players including William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman, and Ola Aina.
Rasheedat Ajibade, one of the standout performers for Nigeria, used the victory as an opportunity to inspire young Nigerian girls, stating: "Your time is coming." Meanwhile, Okoronkwo was recognized with the Super Falcons' fans award for her performances throughout the tournament.
CAF has yet to respond to the Moroccan petition regarding the referee's decision in the final.
