Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has appealed for calm as some Ghanaians demand the deportation of Nigerians from their country, stating there is no cause for alarm over the situation.
Bianca made this appeal on Wednesday during a joint press briefing in Ghana, explaining that viral videos showing anti-Nigerian protests had caused anxiety among Nigerians, which necessitated her visit to Ghana for a firsthand assessment of the situation.
"I would say there's no cause for alarm, they are handling the situation effectively, and we will continue engaging stakeholders. We have met with some of the leaders and individuals involved in a bid to de-escalate tensions," she said.
The Minister noted that since arriving in Ghana, she has not witnessed people burning tyres in the streets or carrying placards everywhere demanding the deportation of Nigerians, indicating that the Ghanaian government and president had effectively intervened in the situation.
This diplomatic intervention comes at a critical time for Nigeria-Ghana relations, as both countries have historically maintained strong ties despite occasional tensions over immigration and trade issues. The current situation appears to be under control, with both governments working to ensure the safety and well-being of their citizens.
The Minister's visit demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to protecting its citizens abroad while maintaining diplomatic relations with neighboring African countries. Her assurances may help calm fears among Nigerians living in Ghana who might have been concerned about their safety following the protests.
