The Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, has raised serious concerns about persistent cross-border attacks on Benue communities, revealing that perpetrators frequently launch their assaults from neighboring Nasarawa State before retreating to safety across state lines.
The monarch made these revelations on Tuesday during an official visit by Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Benue State as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative outreach program.
"Your Excellency Ma, our attackers come from Nasarawa State. After attacking us, they withdraw and go back to Nasarawa State," Prof. Ayatse told the First Lady in the presence of state dignitaries and traditional council members.
The royal father urged Mrs. Tinubu to convey the concerns of the Tiv people to President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that lasting peace in Benue could only be achieved through decisive federal intervention in the security crisis plaguing the region.
During her visit, the First Lady met with state officials, traditional rulers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been affected by the ongoing security challenges in the state.
The Tor Tiv commended Senator Tinubu for showing solidarity with victims of violence in the state and for her humanitarian efforts through the Renewed Hope Initiative, which has brought attention to the plight of displaced communities in Benue.
Visibly moved by the monarch's plea, the First Lady assured him that she would relay the message to President Tinubu. She reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to restoring peace and supporting displaced and traumatized communities across the state.
The visit is part of broader efforts by the Renewed Hope Initiative to address humanitarian challenges in conflict-affected regions of Nigeria, with reports indicating that the First Lady also made a significant donation of N1 billion to displaced families in Yelewata, Benue State.
The security situation along the Benue-Nasarawa border has remained volatile for years, with communities in Benue repeatedly calling for increased federal presence to curb attacks that have displaced thousands and disrupted agricultural activities in the region.
