The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the state government to adopt and implement supportive measures for the promotion of sign language interpretation in government programs, aimed at enhancing the inclusion of persons with disabilities in public life.
The resolution, titled "H.R No. 132/OG/2025 – Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment," was passed following extensive deliberation by lawmakers on Tuesday.
Babatunde Tella, who sponsored the motion leading to the resolution, emphasized that incorporating sign language interpretation in state government programs would reinforce the government's commitment to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in national and international human rights frameworks.
Other lawmakers, including Honourables Omolola Bakare, Kashamu Rasheed, and the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, joined in supporting the initiative. They collectively urged the state government to mandate organizers of all programs—including executive, legislative, and judicial functions—to have certified sign language interpreters present to facilitate communication with deaf and mute individuals.
The Assembly also called on relevant ministries, departments, and agencies, particularly the Ministry of Information and Strategy and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, to ensure compliance with the resolution.
This initiative represents a significant step toward creating a more inclusive environment for persons with hearing impairments in Ogun State, allowing them greater participation in public discourse and government activities.
The resolution aligns with global best practices in disability inclusion and demonstrates the Assembly's commitment to ensuring equal access to information and services for all citizens regardless of physical abilities.
