The Federal Government has appealed for calm following alleged deportation threats against Nigerians living in Ghana, urging citizens not to panic over the situation.
The response comes after a viral video circulated on social media showing Ghanaian protesters demanding the deportation of Nigerians from their country. The protesters alleged that some Nigerians were engaging in criminal activities that they claimed were incompatible with Ghanaian societal values.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, condemned the generalization of Nigerians as criminals, describing such characterization as unfair and dangerous.
"Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fish out and face the necessary sanctions," Dabiri-Erewa stated.
She emphasized that while a few individuals may be involved in wrongdoing, the vast majority of Nigerians living in Ghana are law-abiding citizens who contribute positively to the Ghanaian society and economy.
The NIDCOM chairman highlighted the historical ties between both nations, noting: "Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers."
This incident comes amid a backdrop of occasional tensions between Nigerian and Ghanaian communities, despite the strong economic and cultural ties that have historically bound the two West African nations together.
The Nigerian government's response aims to prevent escalation and protect the interests of its citizens abroad while maintaining the cordial relationship between both countries.
