A former Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Ishaq Bello, has issued a stern warning to young lawyers about the consequences of professional misconduct, emphasizing that unethical practices could result in disbarment.
Speaking at the inaugural seminar organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mentorship Committee, Justice Bello cautioned new legal practitioners to avoid behaviors that might bring them before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).
"You can be stopped from practicing law if you engage in unwholesome practices," the former chief judge stated, drawing from his personal experiences as a young lawyer. "I hope we will not meet at the LPDC. You have qualified as a lawyer, but you can be stopped from practicing."
The Chairman of the NBA Mentorship Committee and Attorney-General of Ondo State, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe for initiating the seminar for young lawyers. Ajulo highlighted that while the mentorship program primarily focuses on new entrants to the profession, it benefits all legal practitioners seeking career advancement.
"This mentorship programme is not only for new wigs, it's for all lawyers, but the major concentration is for the new wigs. It is for all lawyers, especially lawyers that are aspiring to be great," Ajulo explained. "After your graduation from law school, you need mentorship to progress and make good success in this profession."
Ajulo, who serves as the first Chairman of the Mentorship Committee, expressed appreciation to the NBA President for the initiative. "I commend the president for his thoughtfulness on this initiative of bringing ourselves together to mentor these new wigs," he said.
The seminar represents a significant step in providing guidance and professional development opportunities for Nigeria's newest legal practitioners, helping them navigate the ethical complexities of the profession.
