The Federal High Court of Nigeria has approved the establishment of a vacation court at its Enugu Division to address urgent and sensitive legal matters within the South East geopolitical zone during the court's upcoming long vacation period.

This initiative follows an appeal made by the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Oji River branch, Sir Chukwudi Olemeforo, as conveyed in his letter dated June 24, 2025.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John Terhamba Tsoho, granted approval after considering the merit of the request, particularly acknowledging the need for continuous access to justice in the region.

According to the court's schedule, the Vacation Court sittings will commence on Monday, July 28, 2025, and will continue until Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Hon. Justice M. T. Segun-Bello has been appointed to preside over the South East zone vacation court.

The special court sitting is specifically designed to entertain urgent or sensitive matters arising from the five South East states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo.

Mrs. Catherine Oby Christopher, the Director of Information of the court, issued a statement emphasizing that "The Federal High Court remains committed to ensuring timely justice delivery and upholding the rule of law, even during vacation periods."

This development represents a significant step toward addressing the judicial needs of the South East region, ensuring that critical legal matters can proceed without delay despite the court's regular vacation schedule.

The establishment of the vacation court aligns with broader efforts to improve access to justice across Nigeria's geopolitical zones, recognizing the importance of maintaining judicial services even during traditional court recess periods.
