The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the tragic drowning of three teenage boys in a river at Jinkiri Village, Bauchi Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, claimed the lives of three young residents from Durum Village.

According to CSP Ahmed Wakil, the command's spokesperson, the victims were identified as 16-year-old Habibu Mohammed, 16-year-old Abubakar Mohammed, and 14-year-old Zailani Sule.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenagers were engaged in mining activities in the area before they decided to swim in the river," Wakil explained. "Despite prompt efforts to get medical help, they sadly died before reaching the hospital."

The police spokesperson further stated that the bodies of the deceased were examined and confirmed dead at the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi. Following medical confirmation, the remains were released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.

The incident, which happened around 1 pm on Sunday, has cast a shadow over the community, highlighting the dangers associated with unsupervised swimming, particularly in areas where young people engage in informal mining activities.

This tragedy underscores the need for increased awareness about water safety among young people in rural communities and proper supervision during recreational activities near water bodies.
