The Oyo State Government has commenced the demolition of an abandoned hotel structure in Ibadan, the state capital, as part of efforts to eliminate potential criminal hideouts in the city.
The building, formerly known as De Castle Inn, is located at Total Garden Area along the busy Mokola–Agodi Gate Road and has reportedly been abandoned by its owner for several years.
According to information gathered by BenriNews, the demolition exercise began over the weekend after the state government had earlier issued warnings to owners of abandoned structures to put them to proper use or face government intervention.
Mr. William Akin-Funmilayo, the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Survey and Urban Development, had stated in February that the government would take over any abandoned structures that pose security threats to the public.
"Such abandoned buildings are being used as hideouts for criminals to perpetrate evil acts," the Commissioner had warned in his earlier statement.
Prior to the demolition, property within the premises had been removed, and security agents were deployed to the area to prevent any breakdown of law and order during the exercise.
As of the time of this report, bulldozers and other heavy machinery were still actively engaged in pulling down the structure, signaling the government's determination to follow through with its urban renewal and security enhancement policies.
This action comes as part of broader efforts by the Oyo State Government to improve urban planning and ensure public safety across the state, particularly in Ibadan, where abandoned buildings have been identified as potential security risks.
