Ten-month-old Aondosoo Targule Aya, the only surviving child of his family after the deadly Yelwata massacre in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, has been discharged from the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi.
According to a statement issued on Friday by BSUTH's Acting Head of Public Relations & Protocol, Tsenzughul Moses, the infant was officially discharged on Thursday, July 17, 2025, following months of intensive medical care and recovery.
Baby Aondosoo had sustained a severe machete wound on the left side of his buttocks during the brutal attack by Fulani herdsmen, which claimed over 200 lives, predominantly children, women, and elderly residents of the community.
The child's father, Aya Targule, expressed profound gratitude to the hospital management and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for the exceptional care provided to his only surviving child. In an emotional statement, he specifically thanked the medical team for their dedication and tireless efforts in saving Aondosoo's life.
"I am grateful to the doctors and nurses who worked day and night to save my son, despite the tragic loss of my wife and three other children in the incident," Targule said. "May God bless and reward all the hospital staff for their compassion and support during our family's most difficult moment."
With their home destroyed in the attack, Targule revealed that his sister would take Aondosoo to stay with their aunt in the North Bank area of Makurdi, while he returns to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at International Market, George Akume Way, Makurdi.
The Yelwata massacre, which occurred earlier this year, remains one of the deadliest attacks in Benue State's recent history, displacing hundreds of residents and drawing nationwide condemnation.
