Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has explained the reasons behind the heated confrontation that erupted between PSG and Chelsea players following Sunday's Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Chelsea dominated the match, securing a comprehensive 3-0 victory to lift the prestigious trophy. However, the celebrations were marred by an ugly post-match incident as players from both teams engaged in a physical altercation after the final whistle.
"There was pushing and shoving, a lot of tension and pressure," Enrique said when asked about the incident. "The situation obviously should have been avoided."
The Spanish tactician claimed his involvement was merely to separate the players, stating: "My intention was clearly to just try to separate the players."
However, television footage appeared to contradict Enrique's account, showing him raising his hand to the neck of Chelsea's new signing, Joao Pedro, during the confrontation. This action has sparked further controversy surrounding the incident.
Pedro later criticized PSG in post-match comments, labeling them as "bad losers" following Chelsea's emphatic victory. The win allows Chelsea to wear the prestigious gold World Champions badge on their shirts for the next four years.
Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer also commented on the victory, noting that many had doubted the team's capabilities heading into the tournament. "Everyone doubted us," Palmer remarked after the match, highlighting the significance of the achievement for the London club.
The Club World Cup triumph adds another major trophy to Chelsea's cabinet, cementing their status among football's elite clubs on the global stage.
