Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 shirt in honor of their late forward Diogo Jota, making it the first time in the club's history that such a tribute has been paid to a player.

The Portuguese international, who joined the Reds from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, tragically lost his life alongside his brother Andre in a fatal car accident in Spain. Both brothers were laid to rest last Saturday in a ceremony that drew mourners from across the football world.

The decision to retire Jota's number came after careful consultation with his wife, Rute, and family members, ensuring they were the first to know of the club's intentions. The retirement applies across all levels of Liverpool FC, including the Women's team and Academy sides.

Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, explained the significance of the gesture via Liverpool's official website: "It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo's wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention."

"I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club's history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person," Edwards continued.

"By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten."

During his time at Liverpool, Jota established himself as a fan favorite and key player in the squad, contributing significantly to the team's success and helping them secure several trophies, including the Premier League title.

The retirement of his number ensures that Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool's No. 20, creating a lasting legacy at Anfield for a player whose life was tragically cut short.

Spanish authorities have reportedly revealed the cause of the accident, though investigations continue into the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
