The Ogun State government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the tragic road accident that claimed 10 lives and left three others severely injured on Friday when a passenger bus plunged from the Omu bridge at Awa Ijebu axis of the expressway.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Olugbenga Dairo, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on Monday, describing the incident as a painful occurrence that could have been prevented.

"We are saddened by the tragic accident that occurred, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased during this very difficult time. No words can fully capture the sorrow of this moment," Dairo stated.

According to reports, the ill-fated bus was carrying 15 passengers when it veered off and plummeted from the bridge, resulting in the devastating loss of lives.

The commissioner assured that findings from the investigation would guide future safety policies and reforms aimed at preventing similar incidents. He revealed that the state government, through relevant agencies, is already working to enhance road signage, expand speed enforcement measures, and promote responsible driving across Ogun State highways.

Dairo reaffirmed the Abiodun-led administration's commitment to ensuring safety on all state routes, adding that the government would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities, including the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), public transport operators, and unions to ensure compliance with road safety standards.

The accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in the state, particularly at potentially hazardous locations such as bridges and sharp curves where adequate signage and safety barriers are crucial.

Road safety experts have previously emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, adherence to speed limits, and increased awareness campaigns to reduce the frequency of such tragic incidents on Nigerian roads.
