The International Press Centre (IPC) has urged journalists covering Nigeria's upcoming 2027 elections to strictly adhere to established codes and regulations during their reporting activities.

IPC Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, made this call during a one-day training workshop for North West journalists held in Kano. The training forms part of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, Phase II programme.

"The aim of the training is to identify challenges journalists faced and provide solutions for successful election coverage," Arogundade explained during the session.

Challenges Facing Election Reporters

Several key challenges were identified during the workshop, including insecurity and threats to journalists, political pressure and censorship, fake information and misinformation, and poor access to information.

Arogundade emphasized that media houses must maintain ethical standards and professionalism throughout the election coverage period. "Adhering to the 'Nigeria media codes of election coverage' will help in minimising the problems," he stated.

The IPC director further advised that "a journalist can rely on the revised Nigeria media codes of election coverage through app store or hard copy for safe election reporting in Nigeria."

The training workshop brought together selected journalists from four northern states - Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, and Kaduna - to enhance their capacity for responsible election reporting ahead of the 2027 polls.

This initiative comes at a crucial time as Nigeria prepares for another electoral cycle, with media practitioners playing a vital role in shaping public perception and ensuring transparent democratic processes.
