A powerful windstorm has severely damaged the Abdullahi Umar Ganduje Stadium in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State, prompting officials to close the facility until further notice.

The destructive storm struck around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, ripping off significant portions of the stadium's roofing structure and rendering the facility unsafe for public use.

Impact on Local Sports Infrastructure

The Abdullahi Umar Ganduje Stadium, commissioned in 2018 by then Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, during President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, has been a cornerstone of sports development in the region.

Since its establishment, the facility has earned recognition as the most modern and functional sports complex outside Kano metropolis, serving as a vital hub for local sports development, youth engagement, and community activities.

Local authorities have not yet announced a timeline for repairs or when the stadium might reopen to the public. The extent of structural damage and estimated repair costs remain undisclosed at this time.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of public infrastructure to extreme weather events, which have become increasingly common in northern Nigeria in recent years.

The closure of the stadium will likely impact scheduled sporting events and community gatherings that were planned at the venue in the coming weeks.
