A 100-level student of Taraba State Polytechnic, Iorhee Saanmoyol Paul, has suffered a life-altering tragedy after both his hands were amputated following a severe electrocution incident in Jalingo, the state capital.
The unfortunate incident occurred on May 21, 2025, near the polytechnic gate along Roadblock to ATC Road, when Paul was hoisting a flag for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The metal handle of the flagpole accidentally made contact with a high-tension electric wire, resulting in a severe electric shock.
Emergency Response and Medical Intervention
Following the electrocution, Paul was rushed to Gilead Hospital in Jalingo for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to the National Orthopedic Hospital located within the Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
After 28 days of intensive care, medical professionals made the difficult decision to perform a double amputation on June 19, 2025, to save his life.
Support and Rehabilitation Needs
While the state government has taken responsibility for Paul's medical expenses, concerned citizens and stakeholders are calling for additional support to aid his rehabilitation and future livelihood.
Iliya Kefas, Coordinator of Operation Keep Taraba Clean, expressed hope for Paul's recovery and urged the government to provide prosthetic limbs and vocational training to help him adapt to his new circumstances.
Victim's Perspective
Despite his tragic situation, Paul has maintained a remarkable spirit of gratitude. "My joy today is that I am alive, but I couldn't fulfill my plans in life. When I woke up in the hospital, I asked myself, 'Why am I alive?' But the scripture says there is nothing you can give in exchange for your life. So I must thank God," he said.
With a mixture of sorrow and gratitude, Paul added, "Today, my classmates are writing their first-semester exams, and I'm here. That's God."
Paul's family, while appreciating the state government's efforts, emphasized the need for sustained assistance to help him adapt to his new reality and live a productive life despite his physical limitations.
