The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has expressed deep concern over the resurgence of insecurity in the Isuikwuato and Umunneochi areas of Abia State, calling on the joint anti-security crime fighting outfit, Operation Crush, to intensify efforts against criminal elements in the region.
During their June Congress held at the NUJ Secretariat in Umuahia, the journalists urged the state government to begin enforcing Abia State's anti-grazing law to address the growing menace of farm destruction by herdsmen, who have reportedly been allowing their cattle to destroy crops and roam freely through the streets of Umuahia, the state capital.
Call for Sustained Security Operations
In a communique signed by NUJ Abia State Chairman Chidi Asonye and Secretary Iyke Onuegbu, the union commended Governor Alex Otti for achievements in improving the security ecosystem through Operation Crush, which had previously cleared bandits and kidnappers from the troubled areas.
"While we acknowledge the significant progress made by Governor Otti's administration in tackling insecurity, we must emphasize that this fight needs to be sustained and intensified to prevent criminals from regrouping," the communique stated.
The journalists called on traditional rulers, village heads, and presidents-general of town unions across the state to support government efforts by establishing vigilante groups in their communities and taking responsibility for local security arrangements.
Civil Service Concerns
Beyond security matters, the NUJ Congress also appealed to the Abia State government to expedite action on the 2022 and 2023 Civil Service promotion examinations. The union noted that delays in concluding these processes, which have stretched for two to three years, could be demoralizing for workers awaiting promotions and their associated financial benefits.
"Civil servants who have worked diligently deserve timely recognition through promotions. The current delays are affecting morale and productivity in the state workforce," the union emphasized.
The resurgence of insecurity in parts of Abia State comes after a period of relative calm following successful operations by security forces, raising concerns about the sustainability of peace in the affected areas.
