The Nigerian government has announced a groundbreaking partnership between Galaxy Backbone (GBB) and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) to establish smart police stations across the country, marking a significant advancement in Nigeria's security infrastructure.
The initiative was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two government agencies on Friday in Abuja, aimed at revolutionizing policing through digital transformation.
Digital Transformation of Police Operations
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, described the partnership as "a bold step forward in Nigeria's digital transformation and improvement in security."
"This innovation will give birth to police stations with smart connectivity, surveillance, ECMS, artificial intelligence with a robust cybersecurity component," Adeyanju explained. "Smart policing means better surveillance, faster data access, improved reporting systems, and real-time coordination."
The smart police stations will be powered by GBB's fiber-optic network, eLTE, and cloud infrastructure, integrating secure digital platforms into policing to enhance effectiveness, transparency, responsiveness, and public trust in law enforcement.
Addressing Data Collection Challenges
Mohammed Sheidu, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, emphasized that the initiative would propel the Nigeria Police Force to 21st-century standards and address critical challenges in data gathering and collection.
"This is a very symbolic MoU. This is because we plan to move the police to 21st-century standards," Sheidu stated. "One of the problems of the Nigerian Police Force is data collection and gathering. The initiative with GBB will be historic, as it would change the narrative in Nigeria's security sector."
Sheidu added that the collaboration aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's digitalization agenda and makes strategic sense for achieving the government's security objectives.
The implementation timeline for the nationwide rollout of smart police stations has not been disclosed, but officials indicated that preparations are already underway to commence the project.
