The Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee (LPPC) has shortlisted 72 legal practitioners for interview in consideration for the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for 2025. The list comprises 15 law professors and 57 advocates selected from over 1,000 applicants.
According to a public notice dated June 17, 2025, issued by Kabir Eniola Akanbi, Secretary of the LPPC and Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, the shortlisted candidates were grouped under two categories in accordance with LPPC Guidelines and arranged in order of seniority at the Bar.
Shortlisted Advocates
The 57 advocates shortlisted include Theophilus Esan Kolawole, Fedude Zimughan, Ernest Chik Wendu Ikeji, Victor Esiri Akpoguma, Leslie Akujuobi Njemanze, and Akintola Wilson Adewale, among others. The list features legal practitioners from various specializations and regions across Nigeria.
Academic Nominees
From the academic community, 15 distinguished law professors made the shortlist, including Prof. John Alewo Agbonika, Prof. Osy Ezechukwunyere Nwebo, Prof. Nlerum Sunday Okogbule, Prof. Najeem Adeyemi Ijaiya, and Prof. Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, among others.
The LPPC has emphasized that the shortlisting does not guarantee final selection, as candidates must still undergo rigorous interviews and evaluations before conferment of the SAN rank.
Public Input Solicited
In line with established practice, the LPPC has invited public comments on the integrity, reputation, and competence of the applicants. All complaints must be accompanied by a verifying affidavit deposed to before a superior court of record in Nigeria or a Notary Public.
Twenty copies of such comments or complaints must reach the office of the LPPC Secretary no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2025.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is the highest distinction in the Nigerian legal profession, equivalent to the Queen's Counsel in the United Kingdom. It recognizes legal practitioners who have distinguished themselves in the profession through knowledge of law, contribution to the development of law, and integrity.
