The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Abia State Command, has highlighted its crucial role in maintaining peace in Abia communities, with special focus on protecting farmers in their fields.
Abia State Commandant of NSCDC, Commandant Akinsola Aderemi, made this known during the 1st Abia NUJ Agric Show 2025 held at the Police Officers Mess in Umuahia. The event was organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership in Abia to address growing food insecurity concerns.
Agro Rangers Unit: Safeguarding Agricultural Activities
The NSCDC Commandant, represented by I. White, the Officer in charge of the Agro Rangers Unit, emphasized that the specialized unit has been working diligently to ensure farmers can safely conduct their agricultural activities across the state.
"When farms are made safe, food production would increase," Commandant Aderemi noted, highlighting the direct connection between security and agricultural productivity.
The Commandant also revealed that the Agro Rangers Unit recently played a significant role in resolving tensions between farmers and herdsmen in the Obehie area of Abia State, demonstrating their commitment to peaceful conflict resolution in agricultural communities.
Call for Agricultural Engagement
At the event, the Chairman of Abia State Council of Ndieze, Eze Linus Nto Mbah, and the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Boniface Iheanyichukwu Ariekpere, urged Abia youths to combat hunger and unemployment by embracing agricultural business opportunities.
Chidi Asonye, Chairman of the NUJ Abia State Council, expressed concern over the rising cost of food in markets, stating that many Nigerians are suffering from hunger. He explained that the inaugural Abia NUJ Agric Show was organized as a direct response to the national emergency of food insecurity.
Asonye called for "urgent and coordinated efforts to reverse the ugly trend" of food scarcity and rising prices, emphasizing the need for collective action to address these challenges.
The NSCDC's proactive approach through its Agro Rangers Unit represents a significant step toward ensuring that agricultural activities can thrive in a secure environment, ultimately contributing to improved food security in Abia State and beyond.
