The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has successfully recovered the body of Aviv Atzili, a 49-year-old Israeli reservist and member of Kibbutz Nir Oz's civil defence squad, from southern Gaza last week.
According to military officials, Atzili was killed on October 7, 2023, during the Hamas-led militant assault on Israeli communities near the Gaza border. Following his death, his body was taken into Gaza by members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Recovery Operation Details
The recovery operation was conducted in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza. This mission was part of a broader operation that also resulted in the retrieval of another slain hostage, Yair Yaakov, who was likewise killed in Nir Oz during the October 7 attacks.
The October 7 attack resulted in significant casualties and hostage-taking, triggering the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza that has continued for over eight months.
This recovery comes amid continued military operations in Gaza and ongoing international efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and secure the release of remaining hostages held in the territory.
The IDF has not released further details about the specific circumstances of the recovery operation or the condition of Atzili's remains.
