Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has pledged a robust partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to strengthen the state's resettlement, reconstruction, and recovery programmes for internally displaced persons.
According to a statement released by his media aide, Mamman Mohammed, Governor Buni made this commitment during a meeting with Sharon Dimanche, Chief of Mission for IOM UN Migration in Nigeria.
Strategic Budget Allocation for IDP Support
The governor revealed that his administration has implemented a comprehensive state policy addressing the challenges faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). As part of this initiative, the state government has allocated five percent of its budget specifically for infrastructure development to facilitate dignified resettlement and integration of displaced persons.
"Government has invested in education, agriculture, healthcare delivery, roads, electricity and water supply to fast track the resettlement and recovery process of the government," Buni stated.
He expressed satisfaction with the progress made, highlighting that Yobe State no longer maintains IDP camps as all displaced persons have been successfully resettled with dignity—an achievement he described as "a point of reference" for other states.
IOM Commends Yobe's Leadership
Sharon Dimanche praised the state government's commitment to addressing the needs of displaced persons. "It takes a leader with a special heart to show such great concern to the resettlement of displaced persons with dignity," she remarked.
The IOM Chief of Mission reaffirmed her organization's dedication to collaborating with the Yobe State Government to improve the lives of affected populations through sustainable resettlement initiatives.
This partnership comes as part of broader efforts to address displacement challenges in Nigeria's northeast region, which has been affected by insurgency and other security challenges over the past decade.
