Nigerian defender Leon Balogun is set to join Cypriot First Division club Aris Limassol following his release from Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, according to reports from Thema Sports.
The 36-year-old centre-back, who featured in 20 league matches for Rangers last season, became a free agent last month after his contract at Ibrox expired. Despite Balogun expressing his desire to extend his stay with the Scottish club, his wish was not granted by the Rangers management.
At Aris Limassol, Balogun will reunite with his former Rangers teammate Connor Goldson, potentially forming a familiar defensive partnership in the Cypriot league. The move could provide valuable experience to Aris, who finished fourth in the Cypriot League last season.
Aris Limassol's Ambitions
Aris Limassol, managed by Artsyom Radzkow, has won the Cypriot league title once in their history. The addition of experienced defenders like Balogun and Goldson suggests the club is looking to strengthen their squad to challenge for honors in the upcoming season.
Balogun's move to Cyprus marks another chapter in his professional career, which has seen him play in Germany, England, and Scotland. His experience at international level with Nigeria's Super Eagles will also be valuable to his new club.
The defender was part of the Rangers team that reached the UEFA Europa League final in 2022 and won the Scottish Cup in the same year, adding significant European experience to his resume.
