Two journalists with Sahara FM, a privately owned radio station in Niger Republic, have been remanded in custody following allegations of plotting against state authorities, according to reports from the station's owner.
The journalists were among three reporters arrested in early May in Agadez, central Niger, after the station aired reports suggesting the termination of security agreements between Niger and Russia, a key ally of the country's ruling military junta.
According to Air Info, the station's owner, the pair were transferred to Kollo prison, approximately 50 kilometres south of the capital, Niamey, following a decision by a military court judge on Friday. The third journalist was released on bail.
Serious Charges Against Media Professionals
The media outlet reported that the journalists face serious charges of "undermining national defence and plotting against state authority" – allegations that carry significant penalties under Niger's legal system.
This case has drawn attention to the deteriorating press freedom situation in Niger since the military seized power in a coup in 2023. Rights groups and press freedom advocates have increasingly criticized the junta for its repression of journalists and media outlets.
The arrests appear to be linked to reporting on Niger's strategic relationship with Russia, which has become a crucial partner for the military government following its break with traditional Western allies after the coup.
Growing Concerns Over Press Freedom
The detention of these journalists highlights the growing challenges faced by media professionals in Niger and raises questions about the future of independent journalism in the country. International observers note that the case represents a troubling pattern of media intimidation that has emerged under military rule.
The military authorities have not publicly commented on the specific allegations against the journalists or provided evidence supporting the charges of plotting against the state.
As the situation develops, media rights organizations are calling for the immediate release of the detained journalists and for Niger's military government to respect press freedom and the right to report on matters of public interest.
