Chelsea legend John Terry has expressed his frustration with the club's current standing in English football, stating that the Blues need to catch up with three Premier League giants before they can compete for major trophies again.
Speaking ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, Terry identified Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool as the clubs Chelsea must surpass to return to their former glory.
Terry's Assessment of Chelsea's Current Position
"I get frustrated because I want Chelsea to be winning the biggest trophies," Terry admitted in a recent interview. "Are we close? I think we're still a few years away from competing for the Premier League title again."
The former England defender, who captained Chelsea during their most successful period, was candid about the gap between his former club and the current Premier League powerhouses.
"We need to catch Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool to even have a chance of doing that," he emphasized.
Experience and Quality Signings Needed
Terry believes that experience gained through winning is crucial for Chelsea's development under manager Enzo Maresca. He also highlighted the importance of attracting top talent to Stamford Bridge.
"I think we need experience. I think it's through winning. If we're competing for a top striker, a top keeper, I know where I'd be going," Terry stated, suggesting that Chelsea's recruitment strategy needs refinement to compete with their rivals.
Chelsea's Club World Cup Campaign
Terry's comments come as Chelsea prepares for the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins this weekend. The London club has been drawn in Group D alongside ES Tunis, Flamengo, and León.
The tournament presents an opportunity for Maresca's side to gain the winning experience Terry believes is essential for their development and could serve as a stepping stone toward challenging the Premier League elite once again.
