The Imo State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has inaugurated coordinators for its Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration (DMI) across all 27 local government areas in the state, aimed at enhancing grassroots sensitisation and registration of new members.

Speaking after the inauguration ceremony at the party's secretariat in Owerri, State Chairman Callistus Ihejiagwa explained that the initiative is part of preparations for upcoming general elections by establishing a stronger presence at the local level.

"The DMI, as an organ of the party, is saddled with the responsibility of promoting unity and integrating those who are not yet members into its fold," Ihejiagwa stated.

Integration of Obidient Movement

The chairman highlighted that when Peter Obi joined the party, he brought many followers who were not registered members. Now that elections have concluded, the party seeks to formally integrate these supporters to prevent potential conflicts.

Ihejiagwa charged the newly inaugurated coordinators to adhere strictly to the party's constitution in discharging their duties. "You are the foot soldiers of the party in your respective LGAs. Don't ever derail from the framework already established in our constitution. Put your best to ensure the party moves forward. You are not to work for individuals or aspirants. Make the affairs of the party your overall interest," he advised.

Party Leadership Affirmation

Addressing questions about party leadership, Ihejiagwa affirmed that the Labour Party remains united at both state and national levels under Julius Abure, who was democratically elected as National Chairman during the party's convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.

He criticized those calling for Abure's removal after participating in the process that produced him as chairman, accusing them of double standards and disregard for the party's constitution.

DMI's Evolution and Mission

Lady Kay Iwunze, the DMI state coordinator, explained that the inauguration followed a directive from the national leadership. She revealed that State Executive Councils of the DMI were inaugurated nationwide on December 6, 2024, necessitating similar structures across all 774 LGAs in Nigeria.

According to Iwunze, the DMI was originally known as the Obidient Harmonisation Committee (OHC) before being transformed to bridge gaps between the party, the Obidient movement, and other interest groups.

"Our mission is to mobilize and integrate new and old members into Labour Party. Grassroots sensitization with the core values of integrity and transparency," she stated. "To whom much is given, much is expected, we are all mirrors of DMI in our respective LGAs. The change we seek starts from us."

The event culminated in the official inauguration of the DMI coordinators by the state chairman in the presence of other party officials and members.
