The Liberal Progressive & Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC) has issued a stark warning that Nigeria has regressed to electoral autocracy, calling for constitutional disobedience to reset the country's democratic system.
In a communiqué issued by LPPMC National Coordinator Dr. Kingsley Okundaye on behalf of 21 other leaders, the Congress emphasized the urgent need for an immediate biometric audit of INEC's voter register and implementation of blockchain-based voting systems to prevent tampering.
Judicial Reform and Electoral Justice
The group stated that "when courts legitimize electoral heists, democracy becomes tyranny," and resolved to pursue constitutional amendments that would punish judicial officers who subvert electoral justice. They also proposed imposing a 90-day limit for resolving election petitions.
"The 2023 elections showed rigging is now institutionalized. We must act now or lose Nigeria completely," the LPPMC declared in their statement.
Power Rotation and Regional Balance
The communiqué highlighted that 25 years of democracy have failed to address northern marginalization and called for constitutional recognition of power rotation between regions and religions to ensure equitable representation.
The Congress also alleged that the hijacking of the Labour Party demonstrates the need for new safeguards against what they termed "political predators."
Action Plan and Deadlines
As part of their grassroots mobilization strategy, the LPPMC announced plans to launch "Democracy Literacy Campaigns" across all 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria. The group committed to reserving 40% of leadership positions for women and youth in line with gender policy debates.
The Congress called for the formation of a 37-state Coalition for Electoral Integrity by July 1 and issued an ultimatum to INEC to clean the voter register by August 30, with mass voter education to commence by September 12.
Other proposed reforms include live streaming of all results collation to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
