The Kano State High Court No. 23, presided over by Justice Halima Nasir, has sentenced Anas Umar to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murder.
According to court proceedings, Umar was convicted for luring a man identified as Ashiru to a farm locally known as "Sambisa" in Tudunwada Local Government Area, where he fatally struck the victim with a club.
Prosecution's Case
Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Ibrahim Arif Garba, presented what the court described as compelling evidence against the defendant. The prosecution brought forward witnesses whose testimonies were instrumental in securing the conviction.
The defense counsel, Barrister Shehu Sani, attempted to counter the prosecution's arguments, but Justice Nasir dismissed the defense's evidence as insufficient to exonerate the accused.
Court's Verdict
After reviewing all evidence presented before the court, Justice Halima Nasir delivered a guilty verdict on June 13, 2025, sentencing Anas Umar to death by hanging for the murder.
This case highlights the serious consequences of violent crimes under Nigerian law, particularly in northern states where capital punishment remains an active part of the judicial system.
The conviction comes amid ongoing debates about the effectiveness and morality of capital punishment in Nigeria's criminal justice system.
