Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to support persons with albinism, emphasizing that they deserve equal rights, dignity, safety, and healthcare needed to live full and healthy lives.
The First Lady made these remarks on June 13 as part of her solidarity message for the 2025 International Albinism Awareness Day, themed "Demanding our Rights: Protect our Skin, Preserve our Lives."
"I stand in solidarity with all persons with albinism across Nigeria and the world," Senator Tinubu stated. "This year's theme is a great call to action. It reminds us that people with albinism deserve not only equal rights but also the dignity, safety, and healthcare needed to live full, healthy lives."
The First Lady pledged to continue strengthening advocacy for inclusive policies and public education that protect the rights of persons with albinism in Nigeria.
"We must build a society where every Nigerian, regardless of skin condition, can thrive with pride and dignity. Happy International Albinism Awareness Day!" she added.
Albinism is a rare, non-contagious genetic condition that affects people worldwide regardless of ethnicity or gender. People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination and are often subjected to stigma due to their appearance.
The International Albinism Awareness Day, observed annually on June 13, aims to increase awareness about albinism and prevent attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism.
