Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has emphasized that Nigeria's 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance has significantly strengthened the nation's democracy by giving citizens a genuine sense of participation and ownership in government affairs.
The governor made this statement on Wednesday during the commemoration of Nigeria's Democracy Day celebration, highlighting the importance of citizen involvement in sustaining democratic principles.
Speaking through his media aide, Mamman Mohammed, Governor Buni noted that public support for government policies and programs has been instrumental in strengthening democracy in Yobe State.
"It is gratifying that democracy has provided an opportunity for the people to have their voices heard and participate in governance and to own the government," the governor stated.
Inclusive Governance in Yobe State
Governor Buni highlighted his administration's commitment to inclusive governance through an open-door policy that encourages citizen participation in decision-making processes.
"In Yobe State, we have maintained an open-door policy to give the people the opportunity to contribute to governance, and this has given the populace a true sense of belonging and ownership," he explained.
The governor further detailed how his administration has enhanced governance by appointing youths to key positions including commissioners, chief executives of government agencies, special advisers, special assistants, and focal persons.
In his Democracy Day message, Buni called for greater cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure democracy continues to thrive and to improve good governance across the state and nation.
The celebration marks another milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999, representing over two and a half decades of continuous democratic governance.
