The Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area in Imo State, Ifeanyi Nnani, has visited victims of an alleged Fulani herdsmen attack in Agwa community that reportedly claimed multiple lives.

Accompanied by local council officials, Nnani strongly condemned the brutal killings of innocent residents who were attacked in their homes and farms. The LGA chairman expressed his sympathy while visiting survivors who are currently receiving medical treatment.

Among those visited was Joy Osita Achugwo, a pregnant woman who was reportedly shot during the attack. Another victim, Mr. Ekene Davis Onyejiekwe from Umuekpu in Mbano Agwa Autonomous community, confirmed that his younger brother was shot dead in their house by the alleged herdsmen.

Commitment to Restore Peace

While commiserating with the victims, Nnani assured residents that the local government leadership is "strongly committed and dedicated towards ensuring that peace and tranquility returns to Agwa Clan." He emphasized that concerted efforts are underway, with the assistance of security personnel, to combat insecurity in the council area.

In a separate reaction, Kyrian Uchegbu, the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), condemned the attack as "barbaric" and expressed regret that "at the present age, people were still engaging in careless shedding of human blood."

Call for Community Vigilance

Uchegbu urged community leaders to take advantage of the State Government's initiative to form local vigilante groups to protect against future invasions. He advised that individuals with proven character should be selected for these security roles.

The NDDC representative also called on residents to remain security conscious while avoiding any acts of revenge that could lead to jungle justice. However, he noted that he "did not rule out the fact that some people may hide under the guise of Fulani herdsmen to unleash mayhem."

The police have reportedly deployed a special squad to quell the crisis in the Agwa community as investigations continue.
