The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) branch in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, has suspended all travel operations on the Turare–Yantumaki–Marabar Kankara route due to escalating security concerns in the region.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, aims to protect drivers and passengers from the increasing attacks by armed bandits who have been terrorizing travelers along this major transportation corridor.
Alternative Route Established
According to a security analyst who shared the information on social media platform X, the union has directed all commercial vehicles to now follow the Kafinsoli–Gidan Mutum Daya axis, which is currently considered a safer alternative.
"In response to worsening security along the Turare–Yantumaki–Marabar Kankara road, the NURTW in Dutsin-Ma has suspended travel on that route. All vehicles are now expected to use the Kafinsoli–Gidan Mutum Daya road," the analyst stated.
Strategic Importance of the Affected Route
The Turare–Yantumaki–Marabar Kankara route serves as a critical link for travelers in Katsina South. However, in recent months, the area has experienced a significant rise in violent incidents including kidnappings, armed robberies, and road ambushes carried out by suspected bandits.
This development comes amid growing concerns about the general state of insecurity in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where banditry has disrupted normal life and economic activities in several communities.
The suspension of travel along this route highlights the serious security challenges facing transportation networks in the region and the difficult choices transport unions must make to ensure the safety of their members and passengers.
