A fuel station located along Old Akute Road in Obawole, Iju Ishaga, within the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, was engulfed by fire on Wednesday afternoon, emergency officials have confirmed.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that the incident occurred around 4 pm, with eyewitnesses describing a loud explosion that drew the attention of passers-by and residents in the K Farms Estate axis.

Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, confirmed the development, stating: "Our people are on ground, seems the fire started from a building behind the filling station."

Rapid Response Prevents Spread

Initial reports suggest that the fire may have originated from the underground fuel tanks, rapidly spreading across the facility. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service promptly cordoned off the station to prevent public interference and ensure safe containment efforts.

Shakiru Amodu, spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that emergency responders successfully contained the inferno before it could spread to adjacent properties. By 6 pm, the situation was brought under control, with the affected area secured to prevent further risk.

This incident comes amid growing concerns about fire safety at fuel stations across Lagos, particularly during the dry season when fire outbreaks are more common.

No casualties have been reported as of the time of filing this report, and authorities are expected to conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
