At least six people have been confirmed dead following a deadly explosion that struck Gwabro village in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Sunday.
The incident is believed to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the notorious Lakurawa gang, a group with a history of violence in the region.
According to security analyst Bakatsine, who shared information about the attack on his X handle on Tuesday, "Six confirmed dead in Gwabro village, Tangaza LGA of Sokoto after an IED believed to have been planted by Lakurawa exploded. This gang has a track record of violence in the area."
Lakurawa's Reign of Terror
The Lakurawa group has long been accused of terrorizing villages in Sokoto through kidnappings, extortion, and targeted attacks. This latest incident adds to their growing list of violent activities in the region.
Previous reports indicate that the group has been responsible for multiple attacks in both Sokoto and neighboring Kebbi State, including village invasions, house burnings, and livestock rustling.
As of the time of this report, security agencies have yet to release an official statement regarding the blast. The attack comes amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's northwestern region.
Earlier reports from military authorities had claimed progress in dismantling the Lakurawa terror network in Kebbi and Sokoto states, raising questions about the effectiveness of these operations in light of Sunday's deadly explosion.
