The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the state government for threatening legal action against a citizen over a Facebook post, urging the administration to focus on good governance instead of silencing critics.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Benin, the PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman in the state, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, condemned what he described as an attempt to stifle dissent and suppress opposition voices.
The Controversy
The controversy stems from a warning issued by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Samson Osagie, against Mr. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor over a social media post deemed defamatory to Governor Monday Okpebholo and state commissioners.
Osagie had accused Ifaluyi-Isibor of criminal defamation and threatened legal action unless a public apology was issued within 24 hours. The commissioner also demanded a retraction on all social media platforms and publication in at least one national newspaper.
PDP's Response
Aziegbemi argued that the government's reaction was an attempt to intimidate citizens who criticize the Okpebholo-led administration.
"Osagie cannot lawfully silence Edo citizens or curtail their right to comment on government performance and leadership," Aziegbemi stated. "Ifaluyi-Isibor simply stated the truth. His critique reflects the PDP's position and exposes the failures of the current administration."
The PDP chairman further claimed that Edo State is "visibly dysfunctional" and that the governor's frequent absence has caused widespread regression across key sectors including education, healthcare, the economy, and security.
Call for Democratic Governance
The opposition party strongly condemned what it described as attempts to silence opposition through intimidation and threats against members and concerned citizens.
"Edo is part of a democratic nation. Governance cannot thrive on fear, gag orders, or the suppression of alternative views," Aziegbemi emphasized.
He also pointed out what he perceived as hypocrisy in the government's approach, noting that "Ironically, Osagie did not threaten legal action when he was publicly suspended over serious financial and administrative misconduct allegations."
According to Aziegbemi, rather than focusing on silencing critics, the Okpebholo-led administration should concentrate on fulfilling its responsibilities to the people of Edo State.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between the state government and opposition figures as political dynamics continue to evolve in Edo State.
