Chelsea has officially ended their pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan after negotiations between the two clubs broke down over the transfer fee. The Premier League side has decided to walk away from the deal after deeming Milan's asking price excessive.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea viewed the Italian club's valuation as inflated due to what they internally referred to as "Club World Cup tax" – an apparent premium being charged with the upcoming tournament in mind.

"Mike Maignan deal now OFF between Chelsea and AC Milan," Romano wrote on social media platform X on Tuesday. "Chelsea not willing to meet Milan price, deal not proceeding in time for Club World Cup as #CFC won't pay 'CWC tax'."

Financial Gap Too Wide to Bridge

Reports indicate that AC Milan were demanding up to £18 million for the French international goalkeeper, while Chelsea valued him at no more than £12.6 million. This significant difference in valuation ultimately proved insurmountable for the two clubs.

The Blues appear content with their current goalkeeping options, with Romano adding that the club maintains "full trust in Petrović, Sánchez, Jorgensen + talent Mike Penders for GK role."

This development marks another twist in what has been an active transfer window for Chelsea, who continue to reshape their squad under the current ownership. The club has been particularly focused on balancing immediate competitiveness with long-term planning in their recruitment strategy.

For Maignan, who has established himself as one of Europe's premier goalkeepers during his time at AC Milan, this means he will remain with the Serie A giants for the foreseeable future, barring interest from other clubs.

Chelsea fans will now be watching closely to see if the club pivots to alternative targets or indeed places their faith in their current goalkeeping department as the new season approaches.
