Severe flooding has devastated homes and business outlets in Bachure New Extension, a residential community in Jimeta, Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, following heavy rainfall on Monday morning.

The downpour caused drainage systems to overflow, sending floodwaters into streets and homes, damaging household belongings and forcing several residents to abandon their lodgings for safety.

While the rain affected much of the Jimeta metropolis, Bachure appears to have been disproportionately impacted, with no reports of similar flooding in other areas.

Residents Blame Poor Drainage System

Residents have attributed the disaster to inadequate drainage infrastructure and poor maintenance of existing systems. Ephraim Timothy, a local resident, expressed frustration over the situation.

"This drainage was meant to solve our problems, but it's now the main reason our community is under water," Timothy said, referring to the largely waste-blocked drains throughout the town.

Flooding is not new to Bachure. The community experienced almost annual flooding until 2021, when Governor Ahmadu Fintiri commissioned a 5.6km main road with accompanying drainage systems, which was expected to alleviate the problem.

Other Vulnerable Communities

As the rainy season intensifies, concerns are growing for other flood-prone areas in Adamawa State. Jambutu and Yolde Pate in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas have historically been vulnerable to flooding and may face similar challenges in the coming weeks.

The incident raises questions about the effectiveness of current flood prevention measures and the need for more robust infrastructure to protect communities during heavy rainfall.

BenriNews will continue to monitor the situation as local authorities respond to the immediate needs of affected residents.
