A 68-year-old man has been rescued by firefighters after falling into a deep well while attempting to retrieve his mobile phone in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning, June 8, 2025, at the Mobolorunduro Mosque in the Imalenfalafia area of Oke-Ado, Ibadan. According to reports, the elderly man became trapped inside the well after he tried to recover his phone that had fallen in.
Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident to BenriNews, stating that emergency services received a distress call at approximately 6:10 am.
"A distressed call was reported at exactly 6:10 am, Sunday June 8, 2025, and fire personnel were promptly deployed to the scene of the incident," Akinwande said.
"On getting there, the victim was discovered to be a man of about 68 years of age trapped inside a deep well at Mobolorunduro Mosque while he was solely trying to recover his lost phone in the well," he added.
Swift Response by Emergency Services
The fire service chairman explained that the rescue operation was carried out with precision and care. "The firemen swiftly swung into action by tying all necessary knots and observing precautionary measures. The man was rescued alive and handed over to his family for proper care," Akinwande explained.
This incident highlights the dangers associated with attempting to retrieve items from wells without proper safety equipment or professional assistance. Local residents have praised the quick response of the Oyo State Fire Service, which prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
The rescue comes amid growing concerns about well safety in residential areas, particularly during the dry season when water levels are lower, making wells deeper and more hazardous.
